Self-defence

Self-defence training with Krav Generation draws on techniques from a wide range of martial arts, such as judo and kickboxing, as well as Krav Maga and combative training. Importantly, our classes aren’t just about being able to effectively execute moves to protect yourself. We aim to help develop the whole person, because self-confidence and self-belief are an integral part of every individual’s self-defence skillset.

We don’t create fighters. At Krav Generation we instil in our students the discipline to avoid physical confrontation unless a situation absolutely demands it. We teach students to:

• Be aware of potentially threatening situations

• Understand verbal and non-verbal communication

• De-escalate threatening situations

• Defend against all types of attack

• Use controlled aggression

• React and respond instinctively under stress

• Target vulnerable points on an attacker’s body

• Use all types of weapons as a means of self-defence

Why learn self-defence?

The world we live in is an amazing place but, equally, it can often feel dangerous, with knife crime and attacks on the streets ever present in the news. For anyone who has ever experienced some kind of attack, be it physical or verbal, life can change significantly. Often, people don’t know how to deal with confrontation, they may dismiss it, do nothing and stay quiet. This has a disastrous effect on a person’s mental health – fear has a habit of growing and fear of what may happen can take over one’s life.

At Krav Generation we teach you confidence, empowerment, situational awareness, de-escalation, determination and, of course, self-defence. We help people understand weapons and how to defend against them. We use scenario-based training to give a sense of reality when teaching self-defence techniques – it’s what sets us apart.

Remember, it’s better to know self-defence and not need to use it, than to need it and not know it – why not book a free trial session!

Self-defence for kids

Not only do we equip our younger members with self defence skills and strategies, we help them grow in so many other ways that will prove invaluable throughout life.

Self-defence training helps children and young people develop:

  • the courage to say no and recognise situational dangers
  • the knowledge and confidence to avoid and stand up to bullying
  • discipline to walk away from trouble
  • physical coordination to react quickly, defend and escape
  • commitment and endurance to never give up
  • greater self-confidence and pride in their achievements.

At Krav Generation we train in a fun and fully inclusive environment. As well as learning self-defence your child will make new friends and become part of a supportive community.

We currently run group classes for different age groups at Jubilee High School every Wednesday and at Esher Rugby Club every Thursday. Private classes are also available. Please contact us to book or for more information.

About Krav Generation

Krav Generation was set up by Laura Doyle LLB (Hons), a qualified instructor of self-defence and mixed martial arts for adults and children, KIC accredited children’s instructor, UKAMA instructor and a certified instructor with British Combat Association and IKMF. Krav Generation currently runs classes in Addlestone, Cobham, Esher and Staines, with Leatherhead coming soon.

Laura’s interest in self-defence is firmly rooted in a personal experience. Finding herself caught up in a firearms incident in a public place, Laura took it upon herself to take control of the situation. Using judo moves she’d learnt as a teenager, she successfully disarmed the gunman and restrained him until the police arrived. Following that experience, Laura became an accomplished student of kickboxing, Wing Chun, Ken Shin Kai and weapons-based combat. Her discovery of Krav Maga, a system based on natural instincts and reactions provided yet another set of skills and knowledge – it didn’t matter that she was female, it didn’t matter that she was small, every technique could be refined to make what she did very effective, even when challenged by people much bigger than her.

As a certified life coach, Laura has a passion for empowering others. She helps people take control of their lives, grow in confidence, build resilience and inner strength, giving them the tools to react to challenges and excel in the face of adversity. Integrating life coaching with her knowledge of self-defence has given Laura the opportunity to work all over the world. Her experience ranges from training police officers, close protection staff, VIPs and people travelling into ‘danger zones’ to delivering workshops, bespoke classes and seminars to charities, businesses, schools, colleges and universities, along with working with a variety of Surrey-based organisations and supporting young students to achieve their DofE awards.

Today, Laura offers a fun and friendly environment in which students can feel comfortable and secure in their learning. Krav Maga self-defence, combative training and mixed martial arts are integral to Krav Generation, but classes are adapted to meet the needs of individual students to ensure learning is accessible to everyone. Training also incorporates reasonable force instruction, personal safety training, situational awareness and de-escalation training. Laura’s own ongoing personal and professional development in self-defence and fitness means new practices and teachings are quickly integrated into classes.

Along with her qualifications as an instructor, Laura has:

  • Home Office certification
  • SIA accreditation in conflict management, de-escalation, communication and negotiation, personal safety training, physical intervention
  • Non-verbal communication training
  • CNP weapons training
  • National Martial Arts accreditation
  • Ken Shin Kai accreditation
  • UKAMA accreditation

She is Enhanced DBS-checked and has completed courses in Safeguarding Children Level 2 and Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults. She also holds Martial Arts First Aid Level 2 and Non-Verbal certification.

Covering all activities as a martial arts instructor, Laura has both public liability and professional indemnity insurance.

News & Views

By Mark Hurel 29 Apr, 2024
During a recent Krav Generation class there was an interesting conversation that got everyone involved. A student mentioned the increase in the theft of high value items from people travelling on the London Underground, particularly Canada Goose coats and personal belongings such as Apple Airpods and smartphones. It’s become a real problem – on the London Underground alone robberies have increased by over 100% in just six months. Just like we’ve seen shoplifters upping their game and stealing steaks in volume from supermarkets to sell on, there now appears to be a buoyant market for luxury and designer label items sold cheaply and no questions asked – it feels very much like a sign of the hard times we are currently experiencing. It used to be expensive watches that were being ripped off wrists – but where savvy people could easily conceal their watch under the sleeve of a coat or jacket, it’s a lot harder to hide a Canada Goose coat – desirable brands can act like a magnet. Wearing a designer coat shouldn’t make you a target Many of my students agreed that they sometimes feel vulnerable because of what they’re wearing or what phone they’re using in public places. It got me thinking and I decided to run a scenario-based training exercise. As The Standard’s article states, this spate of muggings means that it’s important to be aware of one’s surroundings and who is nearby at all times – it’s something that Krav Generation consistently teaches. So, for the next session I asked students to each bring along an old coat so that we could inject an element of realism to the lesson. The session focused on de-escalation techniques and how to defend against attack. Students wore their coats and carried various personal belongings and we worked on their defence skills. As well as working in the studio, we went outside to a poorly lit area. With ears partially covered, to simulate wearing headphones or Airpods, we worked on their responses to being approached by a gang or threatened by someone with a weapon. Whenever we teach a technique every student works with a partner. We take it slowly, allowing the muscle memory to form and, as it does so, the student’s response becomes increasingly smoother. At the same time, we are mindful to remind students that, despite learning defence techniques, they shouldn’t be lulled into a false sense of security or feel invincible. No one is. Situational awareness is key We train our students to respond appropriately to a situation. In this particular scenario situational awareness means understanding that certain places or environments can hold risks. Wearing headphones or Airpods whilst out and about makes you less aware of your surrounding and more vulnerable to attack. Keeping personal belongings out of sight means you are less likely to become a target. If an attack were to happen, we discuss escape and looking for viable exits. And then there is the one tool that so many of us forget – our voice and the importance of shouting to raise the alarm and attract attention. Scenario-based drills enable students to use the techniques they’ve learnt but this time under a bit of pressure. This helps to train their brains to decipher information quickly in order to determine the best course of action in the given situation. And the muscle memory they have acquired from repetitive practice means they can respond rapidly. Self-defence skills don’t turn us into superheroes Whilst we hope none of our students will ever find themselves in a threatening situation, we want to students to be able to react instinctively rather than feel helpless. And on that note, I’ll finish by reiterating that we never EVER suggest to our students that we’re equipping them with superpowers, that they should recklessly attempt to disarm an attacker or enter into a fight. We can’t even promise that, in a truly threatening situation, a Krav Generation student will be able to perform defence techniques to a sufficiently proficient level to safely counter an attack. But what we can guarantee is that we give them with the defensive tools to do something rather than nothing. Sometimes that is all it will take to keep yourself safe. Why not try a Krav Generation class yourself? The first session is absolutely free! Classes run in Addlestone, Cobham and Esher, with Leatherhead starting on 7 May.
Two teenagers facing off, one holds a knife
By Mark Hurel 26 Mar, 2024
The use of knives by children and young people is being increasingly reported. From using a knife as a threat to steal valuables from another young person or, worse, killing someone during a party, knives are ruining too many lives.
A supermarket worker holds up their hands in a calming manner
By Mark Hurel 22 Feb, 2024
Shop workers are increasingly experiencing threats, abuse and violence as thieves and shoplifters become more brazen in stealing goods. Retailers are trying to address this but training staff in self-defence and, particularly, teaching situational awareness and de-esclation skills would make all the difference to staff, which is where Krav Generation can help.

We start with a warm-up, review the techniques learnt during the previous session and then move on to new techniques. The technique is then applied during a final summary drill when you’ll be asked to react to an attack based on what you’ve learnt – this helps gain the muscle memory for that technique. It sounds serious but you will find yourself having fun.
